Western Wood Preservers Institute (WWPI) is seeking an experienced Senior Wood Scientist to lead our technical programs and serve as a primary scientific and technical resource for the Western treated wood industry. This remote, full-time position can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Wood Scientist will work with industry members, regulators, code officials, technical organizations, and other stakeholders to address issues involving preservative- and fire-retardant treated wood products, including sawn lumber, plywood, utility poles, marine pilings and other treated products.

Start Date: Immediately
Salary Range: $100,000–$120,000 annually, commensurate with experience

Position Overview
The Senior Wood Scientist leads the Institute’s technical programs and serves as a primary scientific and technical resource on preservative- and fire-retardant treated wood products. The position reports directly to the Executive Director and may also be assigned other internal initiatives, external projects, and operational responsibilities consistent with the needs of the Institute.
This remote, full-time position can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.
The Senior Wood Scientist serves as the primary staff lead for the Lumber & Plywood, Fire Retardant, and Utility Pole committees. In this capacity, the position coordinates committee activities, provides technical guidance, supports the development and implementation of committee priorities, and regularly consults with the Executive Director regarding activities, issues, and strategic opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead WWPI’s Lumber & Plywood, Fire Retardant, and Utility Pole programs and committees.
- Research and analyze scientific, technical, code, standards and regulatory issues.
- Represent WWPI before organizations including ICC, ASTM, AWPA and ASC 05.
- Provide technical expertise and advocacy on the appropriate use of preservative- and fire-retardant treated wood products.
- Build relationships with members and industry stakeholders.
- Monitor emerging research, regulations, testing protocols and industry issues.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and represent WWPI at industry meetings and events.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering or Wood Science.
- Experience in wood treating, wood products, or building materials.
- Strong analytical, communication, organizational and public-speaking skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Willingness to travel throughout North America.
